99.9 % of all guitarplayers suck!

Did I get your attention now? ;)
Seriously, 99.9 guitarplayers are only interested in hearing one thing: that's right: guitar!
Most of them never ever get out of venues with a bigger capacity than 250.
"Excuse me , can I get a bit more snare in my monitor?", is most of the time a ridiculous question.
Luckily in most smaller venues the sound-men are also complete tossers, so that evens itself out.
I've done some pretty large shows myself ( I play Hammond organ, so there is no way I can go over 40 watts) , and you know what? the huge orange stacks lined up on stage? Not connected.
Left off-stage was one 30 watts and one 40 watts speaker cabinet in a box, nicely miked up and producing that huge rocking guitarsound.

Oh, and that handsome britt-pop playing guitarist with that rocking AC30 sound on stage? A powersoak did the trick for him. Now he could actually still hear the drums (AND the hammond organ)

Very funny story. As a guitarist and a live sound engineer I can say that I have absolutely no faith in guitarist having any idea on how to sound good onstage. I've had all sorts of problems like this, and have made a whole page about dealing with live sound concerts here

Great read, thanks a lot.

I'm not a person who has done much live playing, but my last gig, which was at the Great American Music Hall in SF, opened my eyes to the wonders of low powered amps. I showed up with my 8-Watt Carr Mercury, set it to 8 Watts and... the sound guy said it was too loud! I dialed it back to 2-Watts, and I was good to go. Oh, and it sounded awesome, coming from IN FRONT of me through the stage monitors. Weird, but cool.
